CES 2009: Resident Evil 5 Updated Hands-On - River Raiding

We take to the enemy-infested waterways in a new area of Capcom's upcoming Resident Evil 5.

Resident Evil 5 Trailer

New RE5 trailer for CES 2009.

With Resident Evil 5 approaching its March 13 release, Capcom teased a little more of the game in its CES suite with a brief playable demo set in a previously unseen locale. The new section focused on main characters Chris Redfield and Sheva Alomar making their way upriver by boat. Although the notion of a boat trip with a lady friend might sound like a fairly mellow experience, this is Resident Evil we're talking about. So, Chris' "quality time" with Sheva featured explosions, dozens of murderous infected, and flying enemies eager to rip off Chris' head. The short demo pleased the masochist in us with its relentless enemies and left us hungry to tear into more of the game.

The demo starts with the pair still traveling with Josh, who we were introduced to in our last hands-on. The trio appears to still be on the hunt for the mysterious Irving, which leads them to take to a boat. The level kicks off with a forced scrolling segment that has Josh taking the wheel of the boat and starting the ride up the river. The trip gets eventful as mobs of enemies start taking shots at the boat. Fortunately there's an inordinate amount of explosive barrels and tanks lying around, so it's just a matter of careful aiming. Though this sequence was fun, we're a little anxious to see how it plays out in the final game, given that the demo afforded us unlimited ammo. We reckon that things will be a lot tenser if you have to be frugal with your bullets. The boat ride also features a number of context-sensitive moments during which you'll need to hit a button and duck to avoid slamming into low-hanging structures. Although you have some measure of free movement on the boat, there's no avoiding the obstacles without hitting the button.

The boat ride comes to an abrupt halt when you reach a gate blocking your path. Josh docks the boat and you'll have to disembark. You and Sheva will make your way to separate switches, which, surprise, have to be triggered in tandem. The short run to the switches is complicated by a mob of enemies, including those flying creatures that we've seen in other demos. To make matters even more fun, there's a majini manning a turret whose arc of fire can rain bullets on you or Sheva. Thankfully, with some good coordination--and by that we mean letting the bad guy focus on Sheva while you line Chris up for a shot--he can be taken out. The demo faded out once we triggered the switches and reboarded the boat.

From all we've seen, Resident Evil 5 appears to be covering all of the expected bases and throwing in a few cool, but admittedly fatal, surprises to the RE formula. Fans of the series will be pleased by what's coming. Resident Evil 5 is currently slated to launch on March 13, so look for more on the game shortly.

i cant believe how many bad comments have been made about this game as i have downloaded the 360 demo and i think it is amazing so what if its similar to re4 because that was an amazing game i personally hope the demo is a good representation of the rest of the game as i love it especially on co-op mode.

honestly i dont call myself a resident evil fanatic who thinks he has the right to say much since my first game was actuallyre4 but i loved this game it made me want to play the others and i liked them to even if they werent like it and were more difficult for me but this is to say resident evil 5 looks great i like its new features and yes its kind of like 4 but honestly why kill something almost perfect and say they should add even more to it because 4 was great and 5 can be better even if they are alike in those styles of gameplay so i for one enjoy that it seems like re4 in so many ways...

I am seriously considering buying a X360 to simply and only get the demo of this game. I always knew it would be the reason why I got something other then a Wii.

some people say that don´t like the new story of RE, but if you think a little, racoon city and umbrella were terminated, now wesker its trying to bring umbrella back but no with zombies, he is trying to create a strong corporation than the last one, starting to steel the new type of virus Las Plagas...Capcom is makin everything good, i think they´re thinkin pretty well the new RE story line.

"I am curious about the sudden appearance of Albert Wesker. He's been M.I.A. since tha 1st RE game (not including the special character choice from RE 4 even tho the suppressed pistol he had could pop heads in 1 hit ). Something about those red eyes just draws me in......."

You are mistaken. Wesker does battle with Chris in Code Veronica. Wesker even comments to that fact in one of the RE5 videos...

Sadly, I believe the new direction could kill RE franchise rather then breath life into it. I have played the demo over 20 times now, and while it's fun; I might as well be playing RE4. Shiva in single player is brain dead. RE5 already gives me the impression it forgot the fear factor once more, and without it should not bare the title. RE5 maybe the last RE game I buy. I just don't like its new direction...

This my favorite franchise game and i hope the RE universe never ends but if it does they should bring all the main characters together from all the past RE games (Leon S. Kennedy is my personal favorite) and keep the new co-op feature.

I also thought that Shiva would end up being an annoyance (I agree that the two character system could slow the game down at some points in Zero), but after playing the demo co-op I found that the co-op system works extremely well. It really puts alot of pressure on both partners instead of allowing for just one person to carry the team (ex. Halo and Halo3). Instead of being annoying I found that it worked to really intensify the gameplay.

As for the control system, it does feel somewhat out of date. However, when the Wii version of RE4 came out I thought it was far too easy. The claustrophobic controls almost add to the gameplay in my opinion. Of course it would be nice to see a more realistic approach to get the same feeling (harder/faster enemies with more intuitive controls), but with RE4's success I guess there wasn't too much incentive to change things up.
