Inside CES 2009

  • CES 2009: Hot and Cold at Capcom

It's not every day that you get to play a videogame on the side of a building. It was that enticing prospect that drove Ricardo and me to head to the sixth floor roof of Planet Hollywood on Friday night to attend Capcom's CES 2009 games event. While industry and press were in attendance, this was a community event, with hardcore fans of Resident Evil and Street Fighter in attendance to play the latest versions of their favorite series, as well as a handful of other Capcom titles.

The highlight of the evening was a massive projection setup that allowed two games of Resident Evil 5 to be literally played on the side of the Planet Hollywood hotel. I got a chance to check out the new level being shown off at the show, playing Sheva in a co-op match and staring up ten stories above me as I blasted T-virus victims and blew gas tankers to Kingdom Come. To be sure, even the biggest TVs on display at CES had nothing on this.

The only problem? The bone-chilling cold. Las Vegas may be known for its desert heat in the summer but, in the winter, it can get chilly and windy as hell. Combine those two and you've got conditions that made even die-hard Resident Evil fans looking to head indoors.

GameSpot's Ricardo Torres and Capcom's Seth Killian doing their best to stay warm, while RE5 plays several stories up in the background.

After an hour of braving the cold, the party moved indoors and down one floor to the London nightclub. With a full spread of food for Capcom community folks to enjoy, a DJ pumping tunes all night, and game stations running everything from Bionic Commando to Street Fighter IV, it was a great night for Capcom fans.

Capcom community members check out Street Fighter IV and the new SFIV arcade controllers.

  • CES 2009: A Tour of the EA Sports Complex in PlayStation Home

EA Sports announced they were getting into the Home business--the PlayStation Home biz, that is--a few days ago and, today, I had a chance to check head over to the Sony booth today to get a look at the work-in-progress of the EA Sports complex and talk to some of the people behind its development.

As you might have seen, the EA Sports complex consists of a huge area to roam around in, and will be home to three minigames upon its release in a few months: golf, racing, and poker. Only racing looked to be working in the demo I saw--and the open-wheel cars looked promising at first, until I watched the actual race itself. As it turns out, the racing looks more akin to Mario Kart than anything else, and the F1-style rides are miniaturized. There's just one track to choose from, though if the racing proves to be popular, new courses, as well as purchasable upgrades for your car are a possibility.

  • CES 2009: Sony booth vlog

GameSpot takes a guerilla-video tour of Sony's massive booth on the floor of the Las Vegas Convention Center, spotting ultrathin Bravias, 3mm OLED TVs, 8" Microlaptops, Flexible displays from the future, and Gran Turismo 5 and MotorStorm...in 3D!

  • Nvidia has Ion netbooks

    Nvidia Ion platform

That tiny circuit board is a Pico-ITX motherboard with an Intel Atom processor and an Nvidia GeForce 9400M GPU. It's a reference design featuring Nvidia's new Ion platform created for netbooks and small-form-factor (SFF) PCs. The problem with current netbooks is that almost all of them ship with Intel integrated graphics which makes them not so great for gaming. The GeForce 9400M isn't a powerhouse compared to discrete desktop graphics cards, but it's better than Intel's integrated stuff and good enough for games like World of Warcraft and Spore.

    Ion platform PC

We saw several SFF Ion boxes on display at CES demonstrating the platform's high-definition video playback performance. Nvidia estimates that Ion-enabled netbook and SFF systems will retail for around $400 but no major system manufacturers have announced Ion-based systems yet. Perhaps Intel has something to do with that.
